Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

 

Location: Akron, OH

Contract Duration: 12 Weeks

Shift: Night Shift (19:00 – 07:00) / Day Shift (3x12 Hours) 7:00 19:00 | 3x12-Hour shifts

Start Date: 03/10/2026

 

Job Summary

Akron Children’s Hospital, a premier Magnet-recognized pediatric facility, is seeking a high-caliber PICU RN for a 12-week assignment. As the hospital does not have dedicated cardiothoracic or trauma units, the PICU manages a diverse and high-acuity patient population, including ECMO, CRRT, post-op heart, and neurosurgery patients. This role requires a clinician with strong critical thinking skills ready to provide 1:1 care in a 23-bed state-of-the-art unit.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Critical Care Nursing: Deliver 1:1 patient care for critically ill pediatrics, adolescents, and adults with complex diagnoses including trauma and cardiac disorders.
  • Advanced Life Support: Manage high-acuity equipment and therapies such as ECMO, CRRT, Alaris IV pumps, and Phillips monitors.
  • Respiratory Management: Provide expert care for ventilated patients utilizing Servo ventilators.
  • Clinical Versatility: Float as needed to other acute care inpatient units and the NICU. Travelers may also be asked to support the Summa location in addition to the Akron main campus.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside respiratory services, pharmacy, radiology, and social services to ensure comprehensive patient outcomes.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: BSN is required (Magnet facility standard).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of dedicated PICU experience.
  • Licensure: Active Ohio State License or Compact License must be in hand at the time of submission (no exceptions).
  • Certifications: Active BLS, ACLS, and PALS (AHA).
  • Technical Proficiency: Epic charting experience is required.
  • Clinical Skills: Proficiency in care of ventilated patients, wound assessment, and infection control/PPE protocols.

Assignment Details & Expectations

  • Shift Details: 36 hours per week. No block scheduling.
  • Floating Policy: Travelers are the first to float to all acute care units and the NICU. Agreement to float must be confirmed at the time of submission.
  • Weekend/Holiday: Every other weekend requirement.
  • Compliance: Flu vaccine is required (Medical/Religious exemptions only). COVID-19 vaccine is not required.
