Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse – Night Shift

Location: Potsdam, NY Start Date: 03/09/2026 Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights, 3×12 (19:00–07:00) Specialty: PCU / Stepdown RN

Unit Overview

Mixed‑acuity unit caring for:

• PCU / IMC patients
• Med/Surg Telemetry
• General Med/Surg

PCU/IMC experience within the last 3 years is REQUIRED.   Patient ratios are adjusted based on acuity.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year recent PCU/IMC experience
• First‑time travelers accepted
• Must be comfortable with mixed‑acuity patient populations
• Locals not accepted (must live >50 miles)

Certifications Required

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS

Preferred:

• PALS
• TCAR

Required Clinical Skills

Telemetry & Cardiac

• Telemetry monitoring
• Interpretation & management of dysrhythmias
• Post‑MI care
• Heparin protocols
• Cardiac drips (including titration)

Respiratory

• External CPAP/BiPAP
• High‑Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
• Non‑invasive airway management
• Tracheostomy care
• ABG interpretation

Endocrine

• IV insulin protocols
• Insulin drip titration

Renal & GU

• Renal failure management
• Continuous bladder irrigation

Lines & Access

• Central line care
• PICC management
• Port access
• Peripheral IV starts
• Phlebotomy

Surgical & Ortho

• Ortho trauma
• Total joints
• Traction
• Peripheral nerve block catheters
• Mastectomy care
• Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur‑evac)

Other

• PCA
• Blood product administration
• Wound care & wound vac
• Substance withdrawal
• CVA & seizure disorders
• Isolation precautions

Job Details

• Ratios:
  • Days/weekends: 1:3–5
  • Nights: 1:3–6
• RTO: Max 7 days
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Float requirement: Yes
  • May float to sister units: West 2, West 3, Observation
  • Float assignments remain within competency
• Orientation: 12 hours

• PCU & MS Tele patients
• Surgical pre‑ and post‑op
• ENT, general surgery, trauma surgery, ortho surgery
• Medical overflow
• Rare pediatric patients (travelers not assigned unless experienced)
