Speech Language Pathologist (Inpatient Acute Care)

Job Type: Permanent Full Time

The inpatient rehabilitation team consists of highly trained professionals with advanced degrees and certifications who address complex medical conditions in the acute care environment. The team collaborates closely with physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients’ functional needs are met and optimized for safe discharge to home or another care setting.

JOB SUMMARY / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Screen, evaluate, and diagnose patients with speech, language, cognitive, and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions and professional consultations.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support patient recovery and safe discharge planning.
  • Document evaluations, progress, and outcomes in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Equipment Utilized:
Computer, augmentative communication equipment, telephone, copier/fax, pulse oximeter, blood pressure device, electrolarynx, VitalStim equipment, endoscope, wall suction, pager/cell phone.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to body fluids, particularly oral/respiratory secretions, and potential communicable diseases.
  • Fast-paced, high-acuity environment requiring coordination across multiple disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Certification / Licensure:

  • Current Hawaiʻi State license as a Speech Language Pathologist (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP).
  • Current BLS/HCP CPR certification.
  • Completion of a FEES (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow) course. If not completed prior to hire, must be completed within six (6) months of employment.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist in an acute care setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior FEES clinical experience
  • MBSImP training
  • Experience with adult swallowing, communication, and cognitive evaluation and treatment
