Job Summary
A vital healthcare hub on the Big Island, is seeking a versatile Surgery Scrub Technician to join its dedicated surgical team. This 13-week contract offers a unique opportunity to work in a community-focused facility providing comprehensive surgical care. You will be responsible for preparing sterile fields and assisting surgeons across multiple service lines, including General Surgery, Trauma, Orthopedics, OBGYN, and Endoscopy.
Key Responsibilities
- Multidisciplinary Scrubbing: Efficiently scrub for diverse procedures ranging from orthopedic total joint replacements to emergent C-sections and gastrointestinal endoscopies.
- Sterile Field Integrity: Create, maintain, and monitor the surgical sterile field, ensuring all AORN and AMMI standards are met.
- Surgical Assistance: Anticipate surgeon needs by passing instruments, holding retractors, and managing sutures and sponges with precision.
- Endoscopy Support: Assist in the endoscopy suite for EGDs, colonoscopies, and bronchoscopies, including the proper handling and processing of delicate endoscopes.
- OBGYN Excellence: Support the labor and delivery team during scheduled and emergent C-sections, maintaining a calm and efficient environment for both mother and newborn.
- Instrumentation: Clean, sterilize, and organize instrument trays, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of decontamination procedures and aseptic techniques.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Scrub Technician in a hospital setting.
- Certifications: * BLS/BCLS (American Heart Association).
- Skills: * Proven proficiency in scrubbing for Trauma and Orthopedic cases (fracture care and joint replacements).
- Experience in OBGYN (C-sections) and Endoscopy is required.
- Licensure: Hawaii State license is not required for this role.
Assignment Details & Expectations
- Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts per week.
- Call Requirement: Must be willing to participate in the unit's on-call rotation for evenings and weekends.
- Holiday Coverage: Required as part of the standard unit rotation.
- Work Environment: KCH is known for a "relaxed but busy" work environment, especially when the ER is active. You will work under the direct supervision of qualified RNs and surgeons.
- Location Perks: Located in Kealakekua, just south of Kailua-Kona, offering easy access to world-famous coffee farms, snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay, and the vibrant culture of the Big Island.

Kona Community Hospital provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. Understanding the specific instrument setups for their primary specialties will ensure a smooth transition:
- Orthopedics: High volume of sports medicine, fracture care, and total joint replacements.
- Endoscopy: Frequent GI procedures (Colonoscopies/EGDs) requiring specialized scope handling.
