Occupational therapists (OTs) are healthcare professionals who help individuals of all ages participate in meaningful daily activities despite physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges. Their roles encompass assessing and evaluating patients’ abilities, identifying barriers to independence, and determining functional needs through observation, interviews, and standardized tests. Based on these assessments, OTs develop individualized treatment plans that may include therapeutic exercises, skill-building activities, and recommendations for adaptive equipment or environmental modifications. They educate and train patients and caregivers on strategies to improve independence, promote safety, and effectively use assistive devices. Occupational therapists also advocate for patients’ needs in healthcare, educational, and workplace settings, facilitating social participation and connecting individuals to community resources. In addition, they maintain detailed documentation, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and engage in research and professional development to ensure evidence-based, holistic care. Ultimately, their primary responsibility is to enhance quality of life by enabling individuals to perform daily tasks and engage fully in their chosen occupations.
