Job Description:

A Speech-Language Pathologist’s work begins with assessment and diagnosis, where they use standardized tests, clinical observations, and client history to evaluate and screen for disorders in speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive-communication, and swallowing, helping them pinpoint the nature and severity of the problem. Based on these findings, they develop and implement customized treatment plans designed to improve each client’s communication abilities and swallowing function using evidence-based strategies and therapeutic techniques. In cases of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), SLPs evaluate and treat feeding and swallowing disorders, recommending exercises, compensatory techniques, and safety strategies to support safe eating. They also provide alternative communication support by assessing needs for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and training clients and caregivers in their effective use. Integral to their role is counseling and education, where they teach families, caregivers, and other professionals how to support patients, reinforce skills learned in therapy, and carry out home practice plans. SLPs work collaboratively with doctors, teachers, nurses, and other therapists to ensure a holistic care approach that addresses all aspects of a client’s needs, and they maintain thorough documentation, monitor progress, and apply evidence-based practices to guide clinical decisions and continually improve outcomes.
