Scrub Tech / Surgical Technologist

 

Job Summary

Under the standards of the Association of Surgical Technologists, the Surgical Technologist (ST) works under the direct supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures. The ST ensures a safe operating room environment, proper functioning of equipment, and optimal conditions for patient safety.

The ST is responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, and assisting in all aspects of the procedure. This role includes training new employees and students in the ST role.

Note: The ST is not permitted to function as a circulating nurse, first assistant, administer medications, or complete patient records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Check supplies and equipment needed for procedures
  • Scrub, gown, and glove self, surgeon, and assistants
  • Perform counts with the circulator before the operation and before closing the incision
  • Assist in draping the sterile field
  • Pass instruments to the surgeon during procedures
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique
  • Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Prepare the surgical suite for the next patient
  • Mentor and train new employees and students in the ST role

Job Requirements

Education & Certification:

  • Trade or Technical School Certificate or Diploma
  • Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of previous experience preferred
