Staff Nurse – Emergency Department (Dual-Acuity)

 

Location: Binghamton, NY

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (03/16/2026 – 06/13/2026)

Shift: Night Shift (19:00 – 07:00) | 36 Hours Per Week

Unit: BGH Emergency Department 

 

Job Summary

Seeking a highly versatile Emergency Department RN for a unique dual-acuity role. This department features a distinct patient mix: 70% Medical Emergency and 30% Behavioral Health. Candidates must be comfortable transitioning between high-acuity medical interventions and psychiatric crisis stabilization, including substance use disorders and acute behavioral health emergencies.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Dual-Track Emergency Care: Manage a diverse caseload ranging from standard medical emergencies to behavioral health crises.
  • Psychiatric Crisis Intervention: Provide specialized care for patients experiencing acute mental health episodes, substance use withdrawals, and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Pharmacology & Safety: Safely administer medications according to UHS policy, maintaining a deep knowledge of both emergency medical and psychotropic pharmacology.
  • Patient Advocacy: Act as a primary nurse and advocate for individuals and families, ensuring care aligns with the New York State Nurse Practice Act and ENA standards.
  • Shared Governance: Actively participate in the Nursing Shared Governance Model and Unit Council to improve peer review and clinical practices.
  • Education: Educate patients and families on disease management and health promotion using evidence-based resources.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Dual experience in ER AND Psych is REQUIRED. Proficiency in substance use protocols and crisis intervention is mandatory.
  • Licensure: Active New York State (NYS) RN License.
  • Certifications (Must be active at submission):
    • BLS (AHA, HSI, or ARC)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • Technical Skills: EPIC EMR experience is required.
  • Education: Associate’s degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred.

Assignment Details & Expectations

  • Schedule: 3x12 hour nights (7pm–7am). Every other weekend requirement.
  • Environment: Binghamton General is known for its integrated approach to community health, specifically addressing the intersection of physical and mental health emergencies.
  • Location: Binghamton, NY 13903.
  • Orientation: Must be prepared to integrate into the UHS Nursing Shared Governance Model immediately.
