Adolescent Psych CPEP | RN Travel Position

🚨 Important Unit Policies

• No first-time travelers
• No part-time or second jobs – This must be the traveler’s primary position
• No block scheduling
• Per diem considered case-by-case, but facility will not schedule around it
• All RTO must be requested and approved before contract start
• Travelers fill permanent staff scheduling gaps
• Travelers are first to float

🛏 Unit Overview

• 40 Total Beds
  • 30 Adult
  • 20 Child/Adolescent
• 1 Fast Track/Triage section
• Security available 24/7
• Average daily census: 15–45 patients/day

👥 Staffing & Ratios

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6–12 (based on acuity)
• Typical staffing:
  • 2 Triage RNs
  • 4 Adult RNs
  • 1 Pediatric/Adolescent RN
  • 1 Charge RN
• Travelers do not typically take charge

🧠 Patient Population

Patients present with severe mental illness and behavioral concerns, including:

• Schizophrenia
• Bipolar disorder
• Major depressive disorder
• Anxiety disorders
• Trauma-related disorders
• Multiple psychiatric comorbidities

Patients are typically medically stable; unstable patients are transferred out.

💉 Skills & Clinical Requirements

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• ONE of the following (required prior to start):
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
  • Handle with Care
  • TRUST Training
  • PMCS
  • MOAB

Experience Required

• Minimum 1 year psych experience (REQUIRED)
• Prefer recent medical experience (MS, Tele, PCU, ICU)
• ED experience NOT required
• Must have:
  • De-escalation experience
  • Restraint use experience
  • Ability to identify major cardiac rhythms

💊 Medications & Procedures

• No IV drips
• IM and PO medication administration
• Common psychotropics:
  • Haldol
  • Zyprexa
  • Ativan

🏥 Support & Resources

Providers

• Days: 3 Psych Physicians
• Nights: 1 Psych Physician + 1 Psych Resident
• 1 Medical Physician each shift
• Physician shifts: 8a–8p

Support Staff

• PCTs perform:
  • Phlebotomy
  • 12-lead EKGs
  • 1:1 observation
  • Patient transport
  • ADLs
  • Contraband search & property inventory
• RT available 24/7
  • Administers breathing treatments
  • Assists with respiratory escalation
  • Can intubate if needed (patient then transferred)

Telemetry

• Rare portable monitoring
• Tele used during codes or sedation cases
• RNs must recognize life-threatening rhythms

Imaging

• X-ray & CT in main hospital
• PCTs transport patients

📅 Scheduling & Expectations

• Every other weekend
• Holiday rotation as needed
• No call requirement
• Royal Blue scrubs
• Multi-area orientation:
  • Inpatient
  • LRC
  • CPEP
  • Detox

• Is confident and calm in crisis
• Has strong de-escalation skills
• Recognizes behavioral escalation early
• Is patient, compassionate, and attentive
• Understands small interventions matter (even offering juice early can prevent crisis)
• Is reliable and flexible with scheduling
• Is not intimidated by high-acuity behavioral patients
