Emergency Psych RN (Days) – Lewiston, ME

 

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (03/16/2026 – 06/15/2026)

Shift: 12-Hour Day Shift (07:00 – 19:00) | 36 Hours Per Week

 

Job Summary

One of New England’s most comprehensive behavioral healthcare systems, is seeking a high-performing Psych RN for its Emergency Psych Services (EPS). This is a specialized, secure unit—one of the only standalone Behavioral Emergency Departments in Maine. You will handle psychiatric crises for patients age 5 and up, focusing on stabilization, detoxification, and acute psychiatric evaluation in a fast-paced emergency setting.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Crisis Evaluation: Conduct rapid psychiatric assessments for patients presenting with major depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and acute substance withdrawal.
  • Interdisciplinary Care: Develop and update individualized stabilization plans in collaboration with psychiatric nurse practitioners, crisis workers, and security officers.
  • Specialized Patient Care: Manage patients requiring medical clearance alongside psychiatric care, including those requesting acute detoxification services.
  • Stress Management: Make critical decisions under pressure in a high-acuity environment while maintaining a therapeutic, calm atmosphere.
  • Documentation: Utilize Epic EMR for real-time tracking of patient progress, medications, and clinical interventions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: * Minimum 1 year of mental health nursing experience is required.
    • 3 years of total nursing experience is preferred.
  • Licensure: Active Maine State RN License or Multi-State Compact License (Must be active at time of submission).
  • Certifications: * BLS (AHA) - Required.
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) - Must be current prior to start date.
  • Technical: Proficiency in Epic EMR is highly utilized.
  • Background: Candidates with licensure hits or previous employment at St. Mary's will not be considered.

Unit & Facility Details

  • Unique Setting: A separate, secure Behavioral Emergency Department connected to the main ED, with dedicated zones for children and adults.
  • Diagnoses: Major depression, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, and psychotic disorders.
  • Floating: Flexibility is required to provide coverage across the behavioral health system as needed.
  • Location: 93 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240.

Financial & Policy Notes

  • Radius Rule: Permanent address must be >50 miles from the facility to qualify for the traveler rate.
  • Cancellation: The facility reserves the right to cancel up to 3 shifts per 13-week contract.
  • Schedule: Days (7a-7p) including holiday coverage.
