Description

Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Berlin, Vermont
Contract Length: 20 weeks


Position Summary

Seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse for a 14-bed ICU unit within a 90-bed facility. The ICU is affiliated with a university health network and provides care for adult patients with critical conditions. The role includes floating to med-surg and ER as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Vermont
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with adult patients
  • Certifications required:
    • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association
    • NIHSS certification
  • Experience with Epic EMR system

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Shift Hours: 12-hour shifts
  • Rotation: Day/night as needed
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling with minimum every other weekend or adjusted to unit needs
  • Floating: Required to med-surg and ER units for patient care as needed
  • Charge Nurse: Required both day and night shifts (not in assignment)
  • Call: No call required
  • Weekend & Holiday Requirements: Weekends based on unit needs; holidays as needed

Patient Population & Care

  • Adult patients (18+) with diagnoses including:
    • Sepsis
    • Respiratory failure (BiPAP, High Flow, ventilator)
    • DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis)
    • Alcohol withdrawal
    • Overdose, suicidal ideation
    • CHF, dysrhythmias, NSTEMI, unstable angina
    • COVID-19, pulmonary embolism, GI bleed
  • Average daily census: 8-10 patients

Unit Specifics & Procedures

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1 or 3:1 (day/night)
  • Ancillary support: CNA/PCT available
  • Unit clerk/secretary available during day shift
  • Advanced practice support: Pulmonologist available during day
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7; respiratory manages ventilators
  • Procedures include:
    • Medication titration and drips
    • Cardioversion assistance
    • Bronchoscopy assistance
    • Conscious/moderate sedation
    • Intubation/extubation including RSI
    • Telemetry interpretation
    • Phlebotomy and IV therapy
    • Blood administration
    • Post-mortem care
    • Chest tube, central line, PICC, arterial line management
    • PCA management
    • Restraints, wound care, pressure injury prevention
    • NG tube placement/management
    • TPN administration
  • Responds to rapid response, code blue, OB critical response hospital-wide
  • Takes transfers from critical access hospitals
  • No cath lab, interventional radiology, neuro, ECMO, or dialysis on site

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation length: 2 days
  • Bi-weekly orientation sessions on Mondays
  • EPIC and Cornerstone modules must be completed prior to start
  • COVID-19 testing and vaccination protocols in place

Dress Code & Equipment

  • Dress code: Scrubs (any color as appropriate)
  • Shoes: Closed toe, any style
  • Jewelry, hair/beard, nail polish: As appropriate
  • Documentation system: EPIC
  • Medication system: PIXIS
  • Special equipment used: Baxter IV pumps, Mindray bedside monitors, Kangaroo enteral feeding pumps

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Floating to med-surg and ER required if ICU census is low or ER has ICU-level boarders
  • Reliable transportation required; public transportation not accessible
  • Must explain any employment gaps over 90 days
  • Complete and accurate work history required for submission
  • Background checks, education verification, and multiple health and safety documents required prior to start (including immunizations, TB testing, drug screening, and COVID protocols)
  • Physical exam within 12 months required
  • N95 fit testing required prior to assignment and annually
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • References and skills checklist verification required
