Stepdown / PCU Registered Nurse (RN) – Nights

Location: Acute Care Hospital – Level I Trauma Center (Magnet Facility)
Unit: Stepdown / PCU / Neuro Stepdown
Shift: 3x12 Nights (4x12s available if preferred)
Assignment Length: 13 Weeks

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Stepdown/PCU Registered Nurse (RN) to join a high-acuity acute care hospital and Level I Trauma Center. This Magnet-designated facility offers a collaborative, fast-paced environment where nurses provide comprehensive care to complex cardiac, neuro, and medical-surgical patients requiring advanced monitoring and interventions.


Schedule & Requirements

  • Shift: Nights (3x12s; 4x12s available upon request)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-Call: Not required
  • Floating: Will float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Scheduling: Discuss with manager
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment
  • RTO: Ideally no more than 5 days
  • License: Active Illinois RN license required at time of submission (no pending licenses)
  • Local Candidates: Accepted (no radius restriction)

Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum Experience: 1 year Stepdown/PCU experience required
  • First-Time Travelers: Not accepted
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (AHA)
    • NIH Stroke Scale
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • ACLS

Required Clinical Experience

Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response

  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Telemetry monitoring (on-unit)
  • Rapid Response Team participation

Cardiovascular

  • Post Cardiac Angiogram
  • Post MI
  • Pre/Post Cardiac Cath
  • Pre/Post Cardiac Surgery
  • Sheath Removal & TR Band management

Neurological

  • CVA
  • Craniotomy
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Pre/Post Neurosurgery

Respiratory

  • Ventilator management
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • CPAP/BiPAP
  • HFNC
  • ABG interpretation
  • Non-invasive airway management

IV Therapy & Lines

  • Central line care/management
  • PICC management
  • Arterial line management
  • Accessing ports
  • Peripheral IV insertion and management
  • Blood product administration
  • Phlebotomy

Medication Management

  • Heparin protocols
  • PCA management
  • Procedural sedation administration
  • Cardiac and vasoactive drips (titration required)

Additional Required Experience

  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis
  • Renal Failure
  • Feeding tube management
  • Ortho trauma & total joint replacements
  • Peripheral nerve block catheters
  • Skin grafts & surgical drains
  • Isolation precautions
  • Wound care / Wound Vac

Preferred Experience

  • Cerner EMR
  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Level I Trauma experience
