ICU RN – Job Summary Breakdown
📍 Unit Details
- Unit: ICU
- Beds: 18 (expanding to 27 beds)
- Patient Ratio: 1:2 (occasionally 1:3 – overflow or PCU downgrade)
- Age Population: Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric
📜 Required & Preferred Certifications
Required:
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS requirement removed (per mgr Sherri Adams – 01/06/2025)
Preferred:
- PALS
- NIHSS
- TNCC (added requirement effective 10/21/2026 per Tracey Holmes)
🩺 Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Critically ill patients with life-threatening conditions
- Sepsis
- Acute MI
- Renal failure patients
- Post-vascular procedures
- Stroke, TIA, Seizures
- ARDS (vent management)
- Lumbar drains
- CV procedures
- Invasive & non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring
- Titration of critical drips (vasopressors & sedation)
💉 Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years Critical Care experience
- Travel experience required
- CRRT experience required
- IABP & Impella preferred
- No travel duos
- Must be comfortable titrating drips

👩⚕️ Unit Support
- Charge Nurse (primarily without patients)
- House Supervisor 24/7
- No nurse aides on unit
- Hospitalist 24/7
- Intensivist not always in-house
- RT available 24/7 (not stationed in ICU but nearby)
🫁 Equipment
- BiPAP / CPAP
- Mechanical ventilation (Trach & ET tube)
- Telemetry (RNs read strips – no monitor tech)
- IV pumps
- Sequential compression devices
- Specialty beds
🕒 Shifts & Scheduling
- 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM
- 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- Block scheduling available (especially nights)
- Every other weekend (Fri–Sat or Sat–Mon)
- Rotational holidays
- No call or standby
🔄 Floating Requirements
- Required to float to Stepdown
- May float to Med-Surg/Telemetry (rare)
- May care for ICU/Stepdown patients boarded in ED
- If floated to Med-Surg: full load (5–6 patients)
- Travelers float in rotation (not always first)
👕 Dress Code
- RN/LPN: Navy
- CNA/Monitor Tech: Dark Grey/Pewter
- Solid scrubs only (no patterns/embroidery)
- Approved fleece zip-ups: Grey, Black, Navy, Royal Blue
- Solid undershirts: White, Grey, or Black
- Closed-toe shoes only (No Crocs)
📚 Orientation
- General Hospital Orientation (Day 1)
- Full Nursing Orientation (1 full day)
- Computer training (Full day for RNs)
- Two 12-hour shifts with preceptor
- Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due at 90 days
