🏥 Unit Overview – Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)

Total Beds: 30 Beds (14 Private / 16 Semi-Private)

📜 Required Certifications

• BLS

👩‍⚕️ Staffing & Ratios

• Goal Ratio: 1:4
• Typical Ratio: 1:5
• Occasionally: 1:6

Charge Nurse

• Takes a full patient assignment (Days & Nights)
• Clinical Assistant:
  • 2 x 12-hour shifts (on floor with patient assignment)
  • 2 x 8-hour shifts (office-based)

Nurse Aides

• 2–3 CNAs per shift
• CNA Ratio: 1:10–12

💻 EMR & Equipment

• EMR: Sunrise
• Tele Monitors: Nihon Kohden
• Tele Techs available, but RNs must read & interpret their own strips

💉 Drips (Must Be Able to Titrate)

• Amiodarone
• Cardizem
• Dopamine
• Dobutamine
• Labetalol
• Nitro
• Heparin
• Occasionally Lasix

🫁 Respiratory Support

• Managed by RT (in-house 24/7)
  • AirVo (High Flow)
  • Respironics (BiPAP)
• Rarely manage chest tubes
• RT available 24/7

🏨 In-House Coverage (24/7)

• Hospitalist
• Intensivist (ICU)
• Residents
• IV Team (All IV starts done by IV team)
• PICC/Midline Team
• Pharmacy (Pyxis)

🗓 Schedule & Weekend Requirements

Shift: 7a–7p or 7p–7a

• Must be on unit by 6:45 am/pm
• Self-scheduling allowed (based on unit needs)
• 4 requested days off per month allowed

Weekend Definition:

• Fri / Sat / Sun = Weekend shifts

Nights:

• 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule

Days:

• 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule
• No true straight day shift
• If working straight days → Must work minimum 3 night shifts per 4 weeks (not required to be weekend)

👉 Only true straight shift = Nights

🎄 Holidays

• Must be flexible
• Typically covered by permanent staff

👕 Scrub Color

• Navy blue top & bottom
• Navy scrub jacket
• No hoodies

🔄 Floating

• Required to float (Tele or MedSurg)
• Ratios:
  • Tele: up to 1:6
  • MedSurg: up to 1:6–1:7 (1:7 not common)
• May float to Pandemic Unit
