Job Description: Ophthalmic Technician
Location: Somerville, MA 02143
Contract Duration: 13 weeks (High likelihood of extension)
Start Date: ASAP
Schedule: Full‑time, 40 hours/week — Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Local Pay: $1720/week
Travel Pay: $2100/week
On‑Call: None
Position Overview:
The Ophthalmic Technician supports a high‑volume adult outpatient ophthalmology clinic by preparing patients, performing diagnostic testing, assisting Ophthalmologists with exams and minor procedures, and ensuring exam rooms and equipment are maintained to clinical standards. The ideal candidate is experienced, organized, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment while delivering excellent patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare patients for examination, including medical history, chief complaint, medication review, visual acuity, and intraocular pressure checks.
- Perform accurate manual refractions.
- Conduct diagnostic testing including visual fields, A‑scan biometry, and corneal topography.
- Assist with fundus photography.
- Assist Ophthalmologists with minor procedures and laser surgeries.
- Triage and document patient telephone inquiries.
- Open and close exam rooms; maintain cleanliness and readiness.
- Sterilize instruments and ensure equipment maintenance standards are met.
- Prepare fluorescein syringes.
- Ensure biomed equipment reviews are completed and up to date.
- Demonstrate strong prioritization, organizational skills, and clinical judgment.
Requirements:
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT or COA) — required
- Minimum 3 years of ophthalmic experience
- Strong manual refraction skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced outpatient clinic (adults only)
- All RTO must be submitted at the time of profile submission
- Must not have worked at CHA within the last 12 months
- Flu vaccination required by start date (medical and religious exemptions allowed)
- COVID‑19 vaccine not required; declination acceptable
