5 South Hematology/Oncology – Unit Notes

General Requirements

• 50-mile radius rule applies
• Fingerprint Requirement
  • Remote process: allow 10 days

Unit: 5 South – Hematology / Oncology

• Patient Population:
  • Hematology / Oncology patients
  • Chemotherapy patients
• Oncology Certification:
  • NOT required
  • Oncology experience preferred
  • Manager will train nurses to administer chemotherapy (good learning opportunity)

Staffing & Ratios

• Typical Nurse:Patient Ratio
  • 1:5
  • Up to 1:6 at times
  • Lower ratios for higher acuity patients

  • May take full patient load if needed

  • Nurse managers in-house Monday–Friday business hours

Must Have

• Level 1 trauma experience

Drips & Monitoring

• RN titration
  • Heparin
  • Amiodarone may be initiated, but patient is transferred to cardiac unit

Telemetry

• All units have telemetry capability
• Patients can be monitored on all units
• Central monitoring station communicates with RNs
• 3 South Tele Unit
  • Central monitors at nurses’ station
  • All patients on telemetry

Respiratory Equipment

• CPAP
• BiPAP (used at night)
• RT assists
• High-flow oxygen available on 2 North

Scheduling

• Shift Length: 12 hours
