5 South Hematology/Oncology – Unit Notes
General Requirements
- 50-mile radius rule applies
- Fingerprint Requirement
- Remote process: allow 10 days
- In-person: can be completed at Jackson or Grenada campus the week prior to start
- Flu Vaccine
- Required at UMMC
- Deadline: November 15
- Only medical exemptions allowed
- Must include documented evidence from a healthcare provider showing a past severe reaction
- Epic Charting
- Epic proficiency required
Unit Overview
Unit: 5 South – Hematology / Oncology
- Beds: 32
- Patient Population:
- Hematology / Oncology patients
- Chemotherapy patients
- Oncology Certification:
- NOT required
- Oncology experience preferred
- Manager will train nurses to administer chemotherapy (good learning opportunity)
Staffing & Ratios
- Typical Nurse:Patient Ratio
- 1:5
- Up to 1:6 at times
- Lower ratios for higher acuity patients
- Charge Nurse
- Takes light assignment
- May take full patient load if needed
- Leadership
- Nurse managers in-house Monday–Friday business hours
- Adult house supervisor starts at 3 PM weekdays and covers weekends
- Each unit has educator + manager
- Smaller units may share leadership
- Nurse Aides
- Yes – available on all units
Required Certifications
- BLS required
- ACLS required for Charge RNs
Experience Requirements
Must Have
- Level 1 trauma experience
- Experience at large facilities
- Comfortable with:
- Lines
- Chest tubes
Preferred
- Hematology/Oncology experience
- Chemotherapy experience
Drips & Monitoring
- RN titration
- Heparin
- Amiodarone may be initiated, but patient is transferred to cardiac unit
- Common Drips
- Cardiac drips primarily handled on 3 South
Telemetry
- All units have telemetry capability
- Patients can be monitored on all units
- Central monitoring station communicates with RNs
- 3 South Tele Unit
- Central monitors at nurses’ station
- All patients on telemetry
Respiratory Equipment
- CPAP
- BiPAP (used at night)
- RT assists
- High-flow oxygen available on 2 North
Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Shift Times
- 7 AM – 7 PM
- 7 PM – 7 AM
- Scheduling Notes
- Travelers are expected to fill schedule gaps
- Managers try to accommodate block scheduling when possible
- Weekend-only option available (not required)
