Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Emergency Room
Location: Glen Dale, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse to work primarily 12-hour evening and night shifts in a Level III Trauma Center ER. The unit handles approximately 55 patients per day with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio. The ER includes 21 beds, with 1 trauma bay and 4 safe rooms for psychiatric patients.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) is preferred but not required.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of ER nursing experience
- Must have completed at least 1 prior successful travel nursing assignment
- Critical care background preferred but not required
Typical Patient Population
- Psychiatric patients (due to inpatient behavioral health unit)
- Chronic conditions such as COPD, CHF, and other lung issues
- Low volume of high-acuity traumas and STEMI cases (these are typically transferred to higher-level centers nearby)
- Occasional walk-in traumas and STEMIs
Work Schedule & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts: 7 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM, 7 PM (most staff rotate shifts)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW), typically 2 steady weekend night shifts
- Holiday coverage only if staffing is insufficient
- Night shift (7 PM – 7 AM) is the biggest need, with occasional off-shift requests (e.g., 11 AM – 11 PM or 3 PM – 3 AM)
Team & Support
- Providers: Up to 4 on weekdays (2 physicians, 2 PAs), up to 3 on weekends (1 physician, 2 PAs)
- Ancillary staff: 1 PRN tech, 2 full-time LPNs (usually 1 ancillary person)
- Security: Contracted guards, generally hands-off unless police intervention needed
- EMR system: EPIC
- Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7 for ABGs and breathing treatments
- Phlebotomy: RNs draw blood unless lab assistance is needed
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor
- Training provided for monitor techs; RNs interpret cardiac strips
Additional Notes
- Radiology services (X-ray, CT) available in ER; radiology transports patients
- ER occasionally holds patients but usually transfers to floors
- Floating outside ER is rare, only to assist with high census upstairs
- Dress code and scrub color not specified
Summary
This position is ideal for an ER nurse with solid emergency nursing experience and prior travel assignment experience, comfortable working night shifts in a busy but not high-acuity trauma center. Strong certifications and flexibility with scheduling are required.
