Registered Nurse - Med Surg

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

Seeking Med Surg Registered Nurses to support a 52-bed all-private-room medical-surgical unit. Nurses must have BLS certification and be willing to float to the COVID unit as needed.


Unit Details

  • Patient Ratios: Mostly 1:7 (day and night shifts)
  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (06:45-19:15 and 18:45-07:15)
  • Schedule: Made out for 6 weeks at a time; staff may request up to 6 days off per schedule
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (3 weekends out of a 6-week schedule)
  • Holidays: Work included in holiday rotation
  • Scrub Color: Navy blue for RNs (top, bottom, jackets); no hoodies allowed

Patient Population & Care

  • Common diagnoses: ortho post-ops, basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), general post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies), infections, COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, cellulitis
  • Hemodialysis on unit; experience with peritoneal dialysis highly preferred
  • Occasional care for patients being tested for COVID; may float to COVID unit if needed

Clinical Support & Resources

  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
  • Intensivist in ICU 24/7
  • IV Team in-house 24/7 (RNs assess IV sites but do not start IVs)
  • Respiratory Therapist in-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy in-house 24/7 with Pyxis system
  • CNA support: 4-6 CNAs per shift (ratios 1:10-12)
  • Charge Nurse takes full patient assignment, supported by Clinical Assistant

Skills & Procedures

  • Drips: Heparin, rare Lasix, PCA with MSO4, occasional Ativan drip; no cardiac or insulin drips
  • Ventilation: Bipap (intermittent), CPAP, High Flow oxygen
  • Telemetry: Remote monitoring as needed; RNs not required to read strips but may do so if experienced

Orientation & Floating

  • Orientation: General hospital orientation plus 2 full shifts on the unit
  • Floating: May float to other Med Surg units, Med Surg/Oncology, or IMC (Med Surg overflow only)

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license (RN)
  • BLS (AHA) certification required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • ACLS certification is a plus
  • Valid driver’s license required (for submission)

Additional Notes

  • Must disclose any licensing issues at time of submission
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
