Description

šŸ„ Unit Overview

  • Department: LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum)
  • Beds: 14 LDRP rooms (patients stay in the same room for entire stay)
  • C-Section OR Suites: 2 (RNs circulate & recover patients)
  • Triage Beds: 4 (mostly staffed by travelers)

šŸ“Š Birth Volume

  • ~90 births per month
  • ~1,200 births per year

šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļø Staffing & Ratios (AWHONN Guidelines)

  • Labor: 1:1 ratio (unless pairing 2 cervical ripening patients)
  • Postpartum: 1:3 couplet care
  • Triage: 1:3 patients (up to 4 with resource nurse support)

Additional Support:

  • Charge Nurse (no patient assignment)
  • Resource Nurse (assists with deliveries & breaks)
  • Triage Nurse
  • 1 CST per shift
  • 1 CNA per shift (may float to HUC role if needed)

šŸ‘¶ Patient Population

Common cases include:

  • 32+ weeks gestation
  • Hypertension (Magnesium treatment)
  • VBACs / TOLACs
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Antepartum patients

āŒ Does NOT accept:

  • Placenta previa
  • Placenta accreta

Community has many home-birth midwives, so patients often arrive for pain control or medical intervention.

🧠 Required Skills & Experience

  • 3 years L&D experience required
  • Mother/Baby experience preferred (1 year)
  • First-time travelers accepted

Must be able to:

  • Attend deliveries
  • Perform 1 hour newborn care
  • Provide postpartum couplet care
  • Circulate C-sections
  • Perform triage
  • Manage magnesium patients

Charge nurse experience is a plus.

šŸ’‰ Drips & Protocols

RNs must titrate drips, including:

  • Pitocin
  • Magnesium
  • Insulin (occasionally)

šŸ„ Provider Coverage

  • OB Hospitalist: 24/7
  • Neonatal NP: 24/7
  • Anesthesia: 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available for equipment support

ā° Scheduling

  • Shift: 7 AM – 7 PM / 7 PM – 7 AM
  • Charge/Resource: 6:45–6:45
  • Travelers fill schedule gaps first
