Wound Care RN – Unit Notes
Department Overview
- Department: Wound Care
- Setting: Inpatient hospital
- Manager/Director: Tamara
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- One of the following:
- WOCN (Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse Certification) – approx. 1 year
- WCEI (Wound Care Education Institute Certification) – approx. 1 week
Patient Volume
- Average: ~20 consults per day (for the entire team)
- Includes follow-up visits
- Busiest Days: Monday & Friday
Workload / Ratios
- Workload is distributed among team members by unit
- Nurses review consults and divide assignments collaboratively
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: 2+ years inpatient clinical experience
- Preferred: Prior wound care experience
Common Diagnoses Treated
- Pressure injuries
- Diabetic ulcers
- Vascular wounds
- Surgical wounds
- Ostomies
Typical Job Responsibilities
- Review wound care consults
- Collaborate with team members to divide workload
- Perform head-to-toe patient assessments
- Evaluate wounds and stage pressure injuries
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (physicians, social workers, RNs, etc.)
- Enter and manage wound care orders
- Apply and manage wound treatments
- Provide patient and family education
Equipment & Treatments
Common tools and treatments include:
- KCI wound VAC systems
- Multiple advanced wound dressings
- Specialty wound care treatments
- Ostomy care supplies
Scheduling
- Shift Options:
- 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Days: Monday – Friday
Weekend / Holiday Requirements
- Weekends: Optional
- Holidays: Optional
Call Requirements
- None
Floating Requirements
May cover all inpatient areas as needed, including:
- Medical-Surgical (MS)
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Operating Room (OR)
Dress Code
- Royal blue scrubs
- Or casual professional dress
Orientation
- 1 day nursing orientation (includes IT training)
- Preceptor training: As long as needed
