Description
Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – PreOp / PACU (Outpatient Surgery)
Location: Santa Rosa, California
Contract Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Day Shift (5x8s, primarily 08:30 AM – 05:00 PM)
Position Overview
We are seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) with experience in Pre-Operative and PACU (Phase I & II Recovery) to support a busy outpatient surgical unit. This role involves caring for patients before and after a variety of same-day procedures, ensuring safe preparation, recovery, and discharge.
This is an excellent opportunity for both experienced nurses and first-time travelers with strong perioperative skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pre-operative assessments and patient education
- Administer pre-op medications and review history & physicals
- Monitor patients during Phase I and Phase II recovery
- Provide post-operative care, including pain management and sedation monitoring
- Deliver discharge instructions and conduct follow-up communication
- Monitor and manage:
- Airway and vital signs
- Sedation levels (RASS scale)
- Pain and recovery progression
- Administer and manage:
- Narcotics/opioids
- Procedural sedation and reversal agents
- Document patient care using Epic EMR (preferred)
- Float to Main PACU as needed
Work Environment
- Outpatient Surgery / Ambulatory Setting
- Pre-Op and PACU (Phase I & II)
- 4 procedural rooms
- Average daily census: ~10 patients
- No overnight stays – all patients discharged same day
- Cases include:
- General surgery
- Orthopedic
- Urology
- ENT
- GI, GYN, Ophthalmology, and more
Required Qualifications
- Active California RN License (required)
- Minimum 1 year of PreOp/PACU or perioperative experience
- Experience with:
- Pre-op and post-op patient care
- Procedural sedation and monitoring
- Discharge planning and patient education
Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – Required
Clinical Skills & Competencies
- Pre/Post-operative procedures and assessments
- Interpretation of lab values and EKGs
- Pain management and sedation scoring (RASS)
- Malignant hyperthermia protocol
- Infection control and PPE compliance
- Management of pediatric to geriatric patients
- Familiarity with:
- Insulin and glycemic control protocols
- Various anesthesia types (General, MAC, Local, Nerve Blocks)
Schedule & Requirements
- Primary Shift: 08:30 AM – 05:00 PM
- Occasional shift variation: 07:00 AM – 03:30 PM
- Monday – Friday only
- No weekends, no call, no holidays
- Float required within PACU areas
