ACLS, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, BLS Certification, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Shift Notes

7p-7a, weekends as needed, Can be floated throughout the hospital for sitter shifts when necessary. Travelers are typically the first to float for sitter shifts.

 

 

Labor & Delivery Unit Overview

Unit Structure

  • L&D Beds: 11 (also used as triage rooms)
  • C-Section Suites: 2 on unit
  • PACU Bays: 2 recovery bays on unit
  • Triage Beds: 2 designated rooms
    • ~4–5 triage patients/day (non-admitted)
  • Postpartum Beds: 17

Patient Volume

  • Daily Deliveries: 5–6
  • Monthly: 150–180

Staffing & Ratios

  • Follows AWHONN guidelines:
    • Intrapartum: 1:1
    • Antepartum: 1:1–3
    • Postpartum/Mother-Baby: 1:3–4

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring (Intermediate/Advanced) or NCC Certification

Patient Population

  • 30+ weeks gestation
  • Stabilize & transfer <30 weeks

Experience Requirements

Must Have:

  • 2+ years L&D experience
  • Postpartum experience
  • High-risk patient care
  • C-section circulating skills

Preferences:

  • Similar size L&D/PP unit experience
  • Epic experience (must specify most recent use)

Other:

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Not accepting Critical Access-only experience

Clinical Skills

  • Drips (titrated by RNs):
    • Pitocin
    • Magnesium
    • Insulin (preferred, can train)

Support Staff

  • Charge Nurse: No assignment unless necessary
  • Resource Nurse: When available, no assignment
  • CST: 24/7
  • CNAs (PP/MB): Vitals, ADLs, glucose checks, tasking

Provider Coverage

  • OB:
    • In-house (Mon–Fri days)
    • On-call nights
  • Neonatology:
    • Onsite days
    • APP coverage nights
  • Anesthesia: CRNA in-house 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy: 24/7

Monitoring

  • Tele techs available
  • RNs not required to fully interpret strips
  • Must recognize:
    • Rhythm changes
    • Basic & life-threatening rhythms
  • EFM System: Epic (CPN), GE Connect

Scheduling

  • Shift: 7:00–7:00
  • Scheduling: Every 6 weeks
  • Block scheduling: Considered, not guaranteed
  • Max: 5 consecutive shifts

Weekend & Holiday

  • Weekends: Every other
    • Days: Sat & Sun
    • Nights: Fri & Sat (as needed)
  • Holidays: Rotation required

Floating

  • Between L&D and Postpartum (primary)
  • May float hospital-wide for sitter shifts
  • Travelers are first to float

Call / Standby

  • May be called off if needed

Dress Code

  • RNs: Navy blue
  • CNAs: Maroon

Orientation

  • 3 days with preceptor
    • L&D
    • Postpartum
