36/48 hours rotating per two weeks 

🏥 Unit Overview: Med Surg 3 North (Trauma Unit)

• Beds: 32
• Patient Population:
  • Trauma: GSW, MVA, falls
  • Post-surgical patients
  • General med-surg & burn overflow
• Acuity: Moderate to high

👩‍⚕️ Staffing & Ratios

• Typical Ratio: 1:5 (can go up to 1:6)
• Adjusted lower for higher acuity patients
• Charge Nurse:
  • Takes light assignment (may take full load if needed)
• Support Staff:
  • Nurse aides available on all units
  • Respiratory Therapy support available

📋 Requirements

• Certifications:
  • BLS (required for all RNs)
  • ACLS (required only for Charge RNs)
• Skills / Experience:
  • Strong experience with post-surgical & high-acuity patients
  • Comfortable with:
    • Lines
    • Chest tubes

💉 Drips & Clinical Responsibilities

• Titration:
  • Heparin
  • Possible Amiodarone (patient transferred after initiation if needed)
• Other Drips:
  • Cardiac drips mainly on 3 South

📡 Monitoring

• Telemetry capability on all units
• Central monitoring station communicates with RN
• 3 South also has monitors at nurses’ station
• All patients are on telemetry

🫁 Respiratory Equipment

• CPAP / BiPAP (typically at night)
• High-flow oxygen available (on 2 North)
• RT team assists

🧑‍⚕️ Leadership Structure

• Nurse Managers: On-site M–F (business hours)
• House Supervisor:
  • Starts 3 PM weekdays
  • Present all weekend
• Units may share managers/educators

🕒 Scheduling

• Shift Length: 12 hours (7a–7p / 7p–7a)
• Common Schedule: 7 on / 7 off
• Weekends:
  • Every other or ~2/month (may increase if needed)
• Holidays: Rotational
• Call: None

🔄 Floating

• Required within skillset across all med-surg units
• Higher acuity patients typically assigned to core staff

👕 Dress Code

• Any solid color scrubs (professional appearance required)

🎓 Orientation

• Day 1:
  • Paperwork, system access (Epic, Omnicell)
  • Unit tour & scheduling discussion
• Training:
  • 2 additional shifts with preceptor

🧾 Fingerprinting Requirement

• In-person option:
  • Available in Jackson or Grenada, MS
  • Must be done the week prior (48-hour turnaround)
• Remote option:
  • Takes 10–14 days for processing
