Description
Unit & Patient Info
- Units & Beds:
- CVICU – 12 beds
- COVID – 8 beds
- MS ICU – 8 beds
- PCU – 16 beds (up to 20 with double occupancy)
- All units under same Critical Care service line
- Nurse:Patient Ratios:
- ICU – 1:1-2 (based on acuity/staffing)
- PCU – 1:3-4
- Common Diagnoses/Patient Types:
- COVID (manual proning), low-level neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, PN, ARF, CRRT, rhabdo, post-MI, detox, chest tubes, art line, SWAN
- Cardiac/Surgical: Impella, TAVR, cardiac surgery, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP
- Skills focus for travelers: EVD, chest tubes, art line, SWAN
Qualifications & Skills
- Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS
- Experience/Must-Have Skills:
- Preferred: IABP, Prismaflex CRRT
- Good EKG reading skills
- Vent weaning/troubleshooting
- Experience in all areas as travelers float across units
- Titrating Drips: Yes
- Common drips: Pressors (levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), anti-arrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, argatroban
Unit Support & Staffing
- Charge Nurse / House Supervisor:
- Charge may take assignment only as last resort
- 2 charge nurses between ICUs & PCU
- House supervisor 24/7 (some exceptions)
- Nurse Aids: None
- Hospitalist / Intensivist: Intensivists in house 24/7; NP supplementation
- RT Coverage:
- RT covers all areas; not dedicated ICU 24/7
- Equipment: vents (troubleshooting/weaning), Glidescopes, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm
- Tele/Monitor Techs: None; RNs read their own strips
- Tele monitors: Nihon Kohden
Scheduling & Shifts
- Shift Hours: 7a-7p
- Scheduling:
- Made 4 weeks in advance
- Some self-scheduling allowed; manager approval required
- First schedule fills holes; trades possible
- Block scheduling generally not allowed
- Weekend Requirements: 4/weekend shifts per pay period
- Nights: Fri/Sat
- Days: Sat/Sun
- Variations possible (e.g., Sat/Sun/Mon)
- Holiday Requirements: 1 winter holiday + eve of another
- Call / Standby: Rare, only if low census (≈1/6 weeks)
- Floating: Participates in float rotation; may float to PCU, MST, EC ICU/PCU
Dress Code & Orientation
- Scrubs: Any professional color; no camo; Navy starting October
- Orientation:
- 8h hospital orientation
- 1st 12h unit shift with preceptor
- 2nd 12h unit shift with buddy
- Additional skill-specific orientation as needed (e.g., open-heart, CRRT)
