2. Unit Overview

• Unit: PCU 16 (can expand to 20 beds with double occupancy).
• Service Line: Critical Care – Hospitalists manage PCU patients.
• Bed Size: 14 beds.
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1 RN : 3–4 PCU patients (depending on acuity).
• Orientation/Training: Fast-paced cardiac and cardiac surgery care including:
  • Post-catheterization and post-open-heart surgery patients (2–3 days).
  • STEMI/NSTEMI management.
  • Chronic ventilator care, alcohol withdrawal, suicidal ideation, new BiPAP/CPAP patients.
  • Thoracotomies and renal disease management.

3. General Job Duties / Required Procedures

• Acute care for patients in Cardiovascular and Surgical services.
• Procedures/skills include:
  • EKG interpretation and cardiac monitoring.
  • IV cardiac medication administration.
  • Peritoneal dialysis, chronic vents, chest tubes.
  • Epidural catheters, PCA pumps, transvenous pacing.
  • Arterial or venous sheath pulling/care.

4. Equipment / Systems

• Monitors & Devices:
  • Philips Cardiac Monitors, Telemetry, Welch Allyn Vital Signs Monitors
  • Medtronic Pacemakers, Zoll R Series
  • Sigma Spectrum IV pumps, Mistral Air Warming Units
• Electronic Systems:
  • Cerner EMR
  • Pyxis Medication Dispenser

5. Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 1 year PCU experience.
• Strong EKG knowledge and cardiac care skills.
• Competence in specialized procedures listed above.

6. Licensure / Certifications

• ACLS & BLS – Active and in good standing.
• Active AZ RN license.

7. Schedule & Shifts

• Shift Options:
  • 7A–7P (Day) or 7P–7A (Night), 12-hour shifts
• Frequency: Minimum 3 shifts per week (option to schedule 4 shifts at regular rate).

8. Floating / Cross-Coverage

• Preferred: ICU float
• Required: MS/Telemetry float for arterial lines and sheath pulls.

9. Dress Code

• Scrubs: Navy
• Hair & Appearance: Business-appropriate
