Description
Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (Evening)
Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide professional nursing care in the Emergency Department based on current nursing knowledge and Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) standards. Care is delivered across the lifespan from neonate through geriatric patients. The role includes patient assessment, development and implementation of care plans, nursing interventions, and evaluation of patient outcomes. Scheduled on-call assignments may be required depending on patient volume.
Responsibilities
- Triage all patients entering emergency care, prioritizing based on physical and psychosocial needs.
- Conduct hourly rounding in the department and half-hour rounding in the waiting room when patients are waiting.
- Document detailed nursing history including chief complaint and health status.
- Develop and update individualized plans of care based on ongoing assessments.
- Ensure availability and functionality of supplies and equipment for emergency care.
- Manage complications and emergencies following ENA standards and facility policies.
- Recognize changes in patient health status and direct appropriate care to ensure safety.
- Document patient responses to interventions to support competent medical care.
- Provide health education to patients and families regarding treatment and discharge instructions.
- Assist patients and families with accurate health information and referrals.
Required Qualifications
- Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, renewed every two years.
- Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for Healthcare Providers, renewed every two years.
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for Healthcare Providers, renewed every two years.
- Valid National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to function effectively as a team member and liaison between patients and staff.
- Demonstrated emotional tolerance, sound judgment, tact, and professionalism when interacting with patients, families, and coworkers.
- Preference given to candidates with EPIC computer charting experience.

- Must meet or exceed the specialty experience requirements for Emergency Department nursing (not explicitly stated, assume standard RN experience for ED).
