About
Founded in 1751, Carlisle is a historic town located 124 miles northwest of Philadelphia in south-central Pennsylvania. It has a thriving downtown area where you can follow in the footsteps of George Washington and other icons from the country's early years along tree-lined streets with magnificent 18th-century architecture. The town played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War with Carlisle Barracks, the second-oldest Army post to serve as a supply headquarters for soldiers. It's also home to Dickinson College, the first college founded in the newly formed United States in 1783. Take a self-guided walking tour to learn more about Carlisle's history, and you'll find a wide range of shops, eateries, bars and cultural attractions, including an art deco-style theater. Visitors and locals enjoy easy access to hiking with the Appalachian Trail nearby and numerous biking paths for exploring on two wheels as well.
