Required Certifications

ACLS, BLS (AHA), BronxCare Hospital Center - Grand Concourse Campus De-escalation Training, Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB), PALS

 

 

Department: Adolescent Psych CPEP | RN NO FIRST TIME TRAVELERS - Bronx--------- does not allow part time or second jobs, this is expected to be their primary job. As they are filling in scheduling gaps and they do not allow block scheduling.  facility will NOT accommodate working around a per diem position- please ensure traveler is understanding of this. Any RTO to be requested for (potential approval) prior to contract start, after start it will not be considered. 

 

 

🛏️ Unit Overview

  • Total Beds: 40
    • 30 Adult
    • 20 Child/Adolescent (work across both populations)
  • Fast Track/Triage: 1 section for triage and fast-track patients
  • Security: In-house 24/7

  • Average ER Patients/Day: 15–45
  • Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:6–12 (depends on acuity)

Typical RN Staffing (8 total)

  • 2 Triage RNs
  • 4 Adult RNs
  • 1 Pediatric/Adolescent RN
  • 1 Charge RN (travelers usually do not cover charge)

    • PALS
  • Plus ONE of the following before starting:
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
    • MOAB
    • Handle with Care
    • TRUST Training
    • PMCS (Preventing & Managing Crisis Situations)

🏥 Patient Volume & Ratios

  • Daily Census: 15–45 patients/day
  • Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:6–12 (based on acuity)

👩‍⚕️ Typical Staffing (8 RNs total)

  • 2 Triage RNs
  • 4 Adult RNs
  • 1 Pediatric/Adolescent RN
  • 1 Charge RN (travelers typically not in charge role)

🧩 Patient Population

  • Severe mental illness & behavioral issues:
    • Schizophrenia
    • Bipolar disorder
    • Major depressive disorder
    • Anxiety/trauma
  • Often multiple comorbidities
  • Typically medically stable (unstable → transferred out)

🛠️ Required Skills

  • Minimum 1 +year psych experience
  • Preferred:
    • Medical experience (MS, Tele, PCU, ICU)
    • De-escalation skills
    • Restraint use
  • ❗ No prior ED experience required

💊 Medications

  • No IVs
  • IM injections + PO meds
  • Common meds:
    • Haldol
    • Zyprexa
    • Ativan

👨‍⚕️ Providers

  • Day Shift: 3 Psych Physicians
  • Night Shift: 1 Psych Physician + 1 Resident
  • Medical Physician: 1 per shift
  • Shift Hours: 8–8

👥 Support Staff

  • PCTs (Patient Care Techs):
    • Phlebotomy
    • EKGs
    • 1:1 observation
    • Transport
    • ADLs
    • Contraband search
    • Property inventory

🫁 Respiratory & Monitoring

  • RT available 24/7
    • Handles breathing treatments
    • Assists with escalation
  • Equipped for:
    • CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow, vents
    • Intubation → then transfer out
  • Telemetry:
    • Rare use
    • RNs must identify life-threatening rhythms

🧪 Diagnostics

  • X-ray & CT: Done in main ER
  • Transport: PCTs
  • Labs: Drawn by PCTs

⏰ Scheduling

  • Based on unit needs (gap coverage)
  • ❌ No self/block scheduling
  • Weekends: Every other
  • Holidays: Possible rotation
  • Call: None
