Job Summary – MedSurg RN (Travel/Contract)

Unit: MedSurg
Beds: 20 Beds
Nurse : Patient Ratio: 1:5

Weekly Hours

• Shift: 12-hour shifts
• Schedule: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Weekly Hours: 36 hours per week (3 shifts/week)
• Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend (or more if desired)
• Holiday: Preferred to participate in rotation

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• NIHSS
• TNCC (required if ER nurse)

Common Patient Diagnoses

• Falls
• CHF (Congestive Heart Failure)
• Bowel Obstruction
• A-Fib
• Swing Bed patients
• Various MedSurg conditions

Required Skills

Must Have

• Strong patient assessments
• Infusion pump management
• Medication administration
• Good communication & social skills
• Teamwork and reliability

Preferred

• ER experience
• First-time travelers accepted

Drips

RNs Required to Titrate: Yes

Common drips include:

• Insulin
• Heparin
• Levophed
• Amiodarone (set rate)

Telemetry

• Monitor Brand: Mindray
• Tele Units: 8 monitors
• Monitor Tech: None
• Nurses read and document strips each shift

Support Staff

• Charge Nurse: 24/7 (no patient assignment; also covers ER)
• Nursing Supervisor: Monday–Friday
• CNAs/PCTs available
  • Vital signs
  • Charting
  • I&O documentation
  • ADLs

Respiratory Equipment

• No dedicated RT staff
• Nurses manage respiratory equipment
• Hamilton C1 ventilator
• CPAP / BiPAP
• High-flow oxygen
• Facility does not keep ventilated patients

Scheduling

• Manager scheduling
• Schedule released 6 weeks in advance
• Block scheduling possible depending on staffing

Floating

• May float to ER to assist, but not first to float
• Flexibility appreciated

Orientation

• 3–6 shifts depending on staffing availability
