Marathon is spread over 13 islands in the Florida Keys, forming the southernmost part of the continental United States. The islands feature a Caribbean-like feel, with abundant sunshine, idyllic beaches and opportunities for all sorts of water sports, including snorkeling, reef diving, paddleboarding, sailing and deep-sea fishing. The 10-mile-long community sits in the middle of the island chain, mostly on Grassy, Vaca and Fat Deer keys. Besides drawing outdoor enthusiasts, Marathon also offers numerous historical attractions, waterfront restaurants and shopping venues. Although it has a laid-back feel, it's a bustling town compared to most communities in the Keys, with excellent dining and shopping options. Maraton holds fishing tournaments throughout the year, and a colossal seafood festival occurs in March. It's also a fun place to be during the holidays, with lighted boat parades.
