Shift: Nights (19:00 – 07:30) | 3x12-Hour Shifts

Job Summary

Seeking a skilled Registered Nurse for their 29-bed Acute Rehab Unit (ARU). This role is designed for a nurse with a strong clinical foundation in Neurology and Post-Trauma care. You will manage a diverse patient population transitioning from acute hospital stays to intensive therapy, focusing on patients with spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations, and complex cardiac issues. This is a collaborative environment where nurses are integral members of the interdisciplinary team, attending regular team conferences to drive patient progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specialized Neuro Care: Provide expert nursing interventions for patients with Neuro and Neurosurgery histories; manage seizure precautions, neurogenic bladder/bowel programs, and mobility safety.
  • Complex Medical Management: Care for patients with Tracheostomies (non-vented) and those requiring Heparin drips or cardiac tele-packs.
  • Rehab Documentation: Master specific QRP (Quality Reporting Program) and rehab-specific charting to document functional independence measures and patient milestones.
  • Respiratory Support: Manage CPAP/BiPAP for sleep apnea and high-flow nasal cannulas (non-heated).
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Participate in mandatory team conferences with PT, OT, and SLP (Speech-Language Pathology) to coordinate long-term recovery goals.
  • Patient Ratios: Manage a night-shift caseload of 6:1, supported by Nurse Aides (1:9 ratio) and House Supervisors.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of RN experience. Strong Neuro skills are a "must-have" for this unit.
  • Licensure: Active Illinois (IL) License (or confirmation that the application is initiated).
  • Certifications: AHA BLS (Required).
  • Compliance: Must produce a negative drug screen (Drug-Free Campus).
  • Documentation Details: Submission requires the last four digits of SSN, middle initial, and any RTO.

Unit & Facility Details

  • Unit Type: Acute Inpatient Rehab (Post-Acute).
  • Beds: 29.
  • EMR: Epic.
  • Floating: Required to float to LTAC or Med-Surg units as needed (will not float to HAU unless specifically trained).
  • Dress Code: Any color scrubs (No t-shirts).
  • Orientation: 12 hours total (non-billable); includes 2 days of classroom orientation followed by 2–3 shifts with a preceptor.

Financial & Logistics Notes

  • Local Rate Policy: A reduction applies to both regular and OT rates if your permanent address is within 50 miles of the facility.
  • Call-Off Policy: OSF may call off up to 12 hours every 13 weeks without penalty.
  • Weekend/Holiday: Every other weekend and every other holiday rotation required.

Clinical Spotlight: The Neuro-Rehab Specialist

In the Acute Rehab Unit, your role shifts from "saving the life" to "restoring the life." Because you are managing multi-trauma and neurosurgical patients, your assessments must be incredibly nuanced. You aren't just checking vitals; you are monitoring for autonomic dysreflexia in spinal cord patients and assessing the "silent" risks of aspiration in post-stroke patients with trachs. Your ability to integrate medical stability with functional progress is the key to a successful discharge.
