Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical Intensive Care

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

Seeking travel RNs for a Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The role involves caring for critically ill patients including those with COVID-19, post-surgical cases, and complex cardiac conditions. Nurses will work across multiple critical care areas and must be skilled in advanced ICU nursing practices.

Unit Details

• ICU beds: 12 (CVICU), 8 (Medical/Surgical ICU), 16-20 (Progressive Care Unit)
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU 1:1-2 (based on acuity), PCU 1:3-4
• Intensivists available 24/7
• Respiratory therapists cover all areas but not ICU 24/7
• No Tele/Monitor Techs; RNs read their own telemetry strips
• Equipment includes ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm, Glidescopes

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• COVID-19 (including manual proning)
• Neurological conditions (low-level neuro)
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sepsis, acute renal failure (ARF)
• Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
• Rhabdomyolysis, post-myocardial infarction (MI), detox
• Chest tubes, arterial lines, external ventricular drains (EVD), Swan-Ganz catheters
• Cardiac surgical patients including Impella, TAVR, ventricular assist devices (VAD), STEMI, PCI, carotid endarterectomy (CEA), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
• Surgical and post-surgical patients

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong EKG interpretation skills
• Experience with weaning and troubleshooting ventilators
• Ability to titrate critical care drips (pressors, paralytics, sedation, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants)
• Preferred experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT
• Ability to care for fresh open heart surgery patients (if experienced and skills verified)
• Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing

Work Schedule & Requirements

• Shifts: 7am–7pm (12-hour shifts)
• Scheduling: Some self-scheduling allowed; schedules made 4 weeks in advance
• Weekend shifts: 4 per pay period (including nights and days on weekends)
• Holiday shifts: At least 1 holiday and 1 holiday eve per contract period
• Call: Possible low-census on-call approximately once every 6 weeks; no scheduled call
• Floating: May float to PCU, Medical Surgical Telemetry, and Emergency Critical Care units as needed
• Orientation: 8 hours general hospital orientation plus 1-2 shifts on unit with preceptor/buddy; additional orientation for specialized skills as needed
• Dress code: Professional scrubs, any color except camo; transitioning to navy scrubs in October

Additional Notes

• Radius rule: Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within 50 miles at certain affiliated facilities in the past year
• Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort
• Nurses are responsible for monitoring telemetry and troubleshooting ventilators
• No nurse aides on the unit

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
