🏥 Unit Overview – Birthing Center / LDRP
This is a combined Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) unit:
- Total Beds: 34
- Postpartum Beds: 14
- C-section ORs: 2
- Triage Beds: 2
- Volume:
- ~150–180 births/month
- ~2,133 deliveries/year
👉 This is a moderate–high volume OB unit (not small, not huge)
đź‘¶ Patient Population
- 33+ weeks gestation
- High-risk cases:
- Preeclampsia
- Diabetes
- Psych/social issues
- Substance exposure
👉 Not just “easy deliveries”—you’ll see complex OB patients
📊 Ratios (AWHONN-Based)
- Labor: 1:2
- Couplet care: 1:3–4
✔️ These are standard/safe ratios
đź“‹ Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NRP
- FHM (preferred: intermediate/advanced)
🚨 MUST-HAVE SKILLS (Very Important)
You need to be fully functional in LDRP:
- Labor & delivery management
- Postpartum care
- Attend deliveries independently
- Circulate C-sections
- Assist with:
- Catching baby
- Newborn transition
👉 Translation:
This is a true all-in-one OB nurse role (not task-based)
💉 Drips You’ll Manage
- Magnesium
- Pitocin
- Insulin
✔️ You must be comfortable titrating drips
🏥 Support & Staffing
- Free charge nurse (huge plus âś…)
- 24/7 in-house coverage:
- OB hospitalist
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)
- OB anesthesia
- Support staff:
- 1 surgical tech (24/7)
- Patient care assistant each shift
👉 This is actually a well-supported unit

- Must:
- Function in labor + postpartum
- Transition newborns
- Attend low-risk deliveries independently
- No floating outside OB
- But must cover mother-baby within the unit
⏱️ Scheduling
- Block scheduling available (nice perk âś…)
- Weekend requirement: every other
- Holidays: rotate
- Call/Standby: yes
- Must respond within 45 minutes
