Stepdown RN – Manager Interview Summary

Unit Overview

  • Department: Stepdown
  • Beds: 33
  • Patient Population:
    • Young adult to geriatric patients
    • Sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain
    • COVID, stroke, renal failure
    • COPD, DKA
    • Complex, multi-system failure cases
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4–5

Experience & Clinical Expectations

  • Strong experience managing high-acuity stepdown patients
  • Must be comfortable with frequent admits/discharges within short timeframes
  • Required to titrate drips
  • Common Drips:
    • Heparin
    • Amiodarone
    • Cardizem
    • Nitroglycerin
    • Insulin
    • IV antibiotics

Certifications & Requirements

  • Required:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • NIHSS
  • Compliance Requirements:
    • Driver’s license required at submission (used to verify 50-mile radius rule)
    • Radius Rule: Must live outside 50 miles
    • Cannot be employed (FT/PT/PRN) with any CommonSpirit/CHI/Dignity facility
  • Additional Policies:
    • Artificial nails are strictly prohibited
    • Exam Requirement:
      • Open-book test during orientation (Friday)
      • Must score 90% or higher or contract will be terminated

Support & Staffing

  • Charge Nurse: Yes (takes assignment)
  • CNAs: Approx. 1:10 ratio (varies with census)
  • Respiratory Support Equipment:
    • BiPAP
    • Airvo (High Flow)
  • Telemetry:
    • Monitor techs available
    • RNs must read and interpret strips independently

Scheduling

  • Shifts:
    • Days: 0630–1900
    • Nights: 1830–0700
  • Scheduling: Unit scheduler assigns (no self-scheduling)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holidays: As needed

Floating

  • May float to:
    • Med-Surg
    • Inpatient Rehab
    • Skilled Care

Orientation

  • Week 1: Classroom
  • Unit Training: 2 shifts (12-hour) on the floor

Additional Notes

  • High patient turnover (admissions/discharges within same shift)
  • Ideal candidate traits:
    • Team-oriented
    • Positive, adaptable attitude
    • Strong communication skills
    • Commitment to bedside report & hourly rounding
  • RTO Policy:
    • Must be submitted upfront (max 7 days per 13-week contract)
    • Additional RTO not approved after submission
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs
