Med Surg RN – Manager Interview Summary

Unit Overview

• Beds: 48
• Patient Ratios:
  • Days: 1:5–7
  • Nights: 1:6–8
• Patient Population:
  • Pneumonia
  • UTI
  • Altered Mental Status (AMS)
  • GI Bleeds
  • Alcohol Withdrawal
  • Falls / General Weakness

Experience Requirements

• Minimum: 1 year Med Surg experience
• First-Time Travelers: Accepted
• Required Skills:
  • Basic Med Surg competency
  • Ability to manage moderate patient load
  • Comfortable with non-cardiac drips

Certifications & Licensure

• Required:
  • RN License
  • BLS

Clinical Skills & Equipment

• Drips:
  • Heparin
  • Bumex
  • Lasix
  • (No cardiac drip titration required)
• Respiratory Support:
  • BiPAP, CPAP, High Flow (managed by RT)
  • RN role: monitoring only
• Telemetry:
  • Monitor tech handles interpretation
  • RNs not required to read strips

Support Staff

• Charge Nurse:
  • 2 on days (take assignments)
  • Nights:
    • If 2 → take assignments
    • If 1 → no assignment
• PCTs/CNAs:
  • Ratio: ~1:10–12 (can vary)
  • Duties include:
    • Vitals, blood glucose
    • EKGs, telemetry setup
    • ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting, repositioning)

Scheduling

• Shifts:
  • RNs: 7:00 – 19:00 / 19:00 – 07:00
  • CNAs: 6:00 – 18:00
• Scheduling Notes:
  • No self or block scheduling
  • Manager creates schedule
  • Travelers expected to fill gaps and be flexible
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Rotational

Floating

• Required to float to:
  • Med Surg
  • Med Surg Tele
  • IMC (lower acuity patients)

Orientation

• 1 day classroom/EMR
• 1 day with preceptor
