Description
Assistant Unit Manager (Pre-op, PACU, & Pre-Admission) – Greenbrae (San Francisco North Bay), CA
Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (Starts 04/13/2026)
Shift: Days | Monday – Friday (Normal Business Hours) | No Weekends
Job Summary:
Seeking a seasoned nurse leader to step into the role of Assistant Unit Manager (AUM). This pivotal leadership position oversees the clinical operations across the perioperative continuum: Pre-Admission Testing, Pre-op, and PACU. You will serve as the bridge between frontline clinical staff and executive leadership, ensuring that surgical flow remains efficient, safety standards are met, and patient transitions from admission to recovery are seamless. This is a high-level contract for a leader who excels in the fast-paced, high-acuity environment of anesthesia recovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership: Oversee daily operations of the PACU and Pre-op areas; manage staffing assignments, clinical escalations, and unit flow.
- Specialized Oversight: While managing the entire perioperative suite, you must provide expert clinical guidance specifically for PACU recovery, including Phase I anesthesia and high-acuity surgical boarders.
- Pre-Admission Strategy: Ensure the Pre-Admission department effectively clears patients for surgery, minimizing day-of-surgery cancellations.
- Quality & Safety: Monitor adherence to AORN and ASPAN standards; participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
- Interdisciplinary Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the OR charge team to coordinate surgical volume and bed availability.
- Call Coverage: Occasional weekend phone call coverage may be required to support the leadership team.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: * Minimum 5+ years of clinical experience in PACU and/or Pre-op.
- Minimum 2+ years of formal leadership experience (Unit Manager, Assistant Manager, or heavy Charge RN experience).
- Leadership experience in PACU is mandatory.
- Education: BSN or higher is required.
- Licensure: Active California (CA) RN License (Must be active at time of submission).
- Certifications: AHA ACLS and BLS (Required).
- Technical Skills: Epic EMR experience is required.
Unit & Facility Details
- Environment: A progressive, acute care hospital serving the affluent North Bay community.
- Bed Size: 150–500 beds.
- Start Date Note: Very urgent. Candidates with start dates more than 2 weeks after 04/13/2026 will be automatically declined.
Financial & Logistics Notes
- Call-Off Policy: The facility may call off up to 36 hours during the 13-week assignment at no cost to the facility.
- Schedule: M-F business hours, providing an excellent work-life balance for a management-level role.
Clinical Spotlight: The Perioperative Architect
In this AUM role, you aren't just managing people; you are managing a complex "air traffic control" system. The success of the surgical day depends on how well you balance the throughput from Pre-op into the OR, and the availability of PACU beds for recovery. Because MarinHealth is a high-acuity center, your clinical background in PACU is vital—you need to be the "expert in the room" when an anesthesia emergence goes wrong or a post-op patient requires immediate ICU escalation.
Greenbrae is located in the heart of Marin County, offering stunning views of Mt. Tamalpais and immediate access to both San Francisco and the Napa Valley.
