Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Float Pool (ICU/MedSurg Tele/PCU)
Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit/Department Overview
- Float Pool includes ICU, MedSurg Telemetry, and PCU units across two campuses.
- Units also cover inpatient holding in the Emergency Department.
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- MedSurg Telemetry: 1:5-6
- Patient population includes geriatric, orthopedic, post-procedural cardiac patients (post MI, post cardiac cath, CABG post-op day 3-4).
- Respiratory support equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP, and heated high flow in PCU.
Required Certifications & Exams
- BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing. Failure results in a 6-month disqualification from assignments in this region.
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of ICU experience required.
- Must be comfortable titrating drips including Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Insulin.
- Ability to interpret cardiac monitor strips is required.
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shifts are 12 hours, typically 7 AM to 7 PM for day and evening shifts.
- Schedule is created by the float pool scheduler and published 6 weeks in advance for 4-week blocks.
- Night shift may allow block scheduling.
- Weekend work is every other weekend.
- Holiday shifts include travelers in permanent staff rotation.
- Call/standby may be required during shifts with excessive staff; standby means being available to be called in at any time during the 12-hour shift.
- Unit assignments are communicated by text message approximately 2 hours before shift start.
- Distance between campuses is about 20-25 minutes.
Orientation
- Includes an 8-hour general hospital orientation day.
- Followed by two 12-hour shifts for unit-specific orientation (MedSurg Tele and PCU).
- Orientation is similar but smaller at the East campus.
Additional Notes
- Nurse aids are utilized on all units.
- Charge nurses do not take patient assignments.
- Dress code currently solid color professional scrubs; transitioning to navy scrubs in alignment with organizational guidelines.
- Radius rule: Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any affiliated facilities within the past year within a 50-mile radius.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience within the last year
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- BLS certification
- ACLS certification
