Job Opportunity: Med/Surg 2 Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

• Unit Beds: 24
• Minimum Years of Experience Required: 2 years
• First-time travelers accepted: Yes

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

• Orthopedics: total hip and knee replacements, spinal surgeries
• General Medical-Surgical: congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory, kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal issues

Patient Ratios

• Days/Evenings: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
• Nights: 1 nurse to 5 patients

Required Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred

Skills Required

• Peripheral IV (PIV) starts
• Wound care, dressing changes, wound vacs
• Management of drains, chest tubes, stable tracheostomy
• Knowledge of patients on BiPAP/CPAP
• Administration of insulin and heparin drips

Support Within the Department

• Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) with a ratio of 1:5-10 depending on shift (assist with vitals, blood glucose, IV removals)
• Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) available on days and part-time evenings
• Charge nurse available who takes modified patient assignments
• Phlebotomy for peripheral lab draws
• Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available weekdays
• No IV/VAT team; notify House Supervisor for difficult IV sticks

Technology / Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC (preferred experience)
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing System: Pyxis

Floating

• Floating within scope of practice possible, mostly to Medical-Surgical 1, Cardiac Medical-Surgical 2, and Emergency Department Holding

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• 1-2 twelve-hour shifts on the unit

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every third weekend
• No on-call required
• Holiday work may include up to 3 holidays during contract (e.g., Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day)
• Request time off (RTO) approval up to 7 days
• Shift times:

  • 07:00–19:00
  • 15:00–03:00
  • 19:00–07:00
  • 03:00–15:00
• Schedule cycles made in 4-6 week increments, provided 2 weeks in advance
• Scheduling accommodations made when possible

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
• Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, including recent experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Experience managing chest tubes and stable tracheostomy care
