Required Qualifications

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (2-year college program)

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience

License

  • Active RN license (State of Maine or Compact License)

Certification

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required

Charge Nurse – Position Summary (Simplified)

The Charge Nurse supports the Director of Nursing and helps ensure smooth daily operations of a nursing unit. This role combines clinical leadership, care coordination, and administrative backup responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Leadership

  • Manage and coordinate nursing care for assigned patients/residents during shifts
  • Take full responsibility for:
    • Assessment
    • Care planning
    • Implementation of care
    • Evaluation of patient outcomes

2. Team Coordination

  • Direct and supervise nursing staff and support teams
  • Work collaboratively with:
    • Nurses
    • Ancillary staff
    • Interdisciplinary care team

3. Patient & Family Support

  • Participate in patient/resident and family education
  • Ensure privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times

4. Administrative Support

  • Assist the Director of Nursing (DON) in meeting unit goals
  • Provide backup administrative support when leadership is absent
  • Act as a resource for the unit and support quality management efforts
