Charge Nurse – Position Summary (Simplified)
The Charge Nurse supports the Director of Nursing and helps ensure smooth daily operations of a nursing unit. This role combines clinical leadership, care coordination, and administrative backup responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership
- Manage and coordinate nursing care for assigned patients/residents during shifts
- Take full responsibility for:
- Assessment
- Care planning
- Implementation of care
- Evaluation of patient outcomes
2. Team Coordination
- Direct and supervise nursing staff and support teams
- Work collaboratively with:
- Nurses
- Ancillary staff
- Interdisciplinary care team
3. Patient & Family Support
- Participate in patient/resident and family education
- Ensure privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times
4. Administrative Support
- Assist the Director of Nursing (DON) in meeting unit goals
- Provide backup administrative support when leadership is absent
- Act as a resource for the unit and support quality management efforts
