RN – Transport Nurse Specialist (ICU/ER)
Location: Washington, DC (Must live outside 50-mile radius)
Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Job Summary:
The Transport Nurse Specialist (TNS) provides safe, high-quality, and therapeutic care during inter-hospital transport for patients ranging from infants to adults. This role requires independent clinical judgment to perform patient assessment, stabilization, and advanced medical interventions during transport via air or ground. The TNS collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes while supporting trauma, critical care, and emergency service operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform autonomous patient assessments and ongoing monitoring during transport
- Stabilize critically ill or injured patients using advanced critical care skills
- Administer medications, manage ventilators, and operate life-support equipment
- Perform invasive and emergency procedures as needed during transport
- Communicate effectively with sending and receiving facilities
- Collaborate with healthcare teams to implement appropriate treatment plans
- Participate in training, simulation labs, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Education & Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Minimum experience requirements:
- 3+ years ICU and/or Emergency Department experience (preferred), OR
- 2+ years in a high-volume (50K+ visits/year) tertiary ICU/ED, OR
- 2+ years recent critical care transport experience as a team leader (required)
- Certifications required: ACLS, BLS, TNCC, NIHSS
- One advanced certification preferred: CEN, CCRN, CTRN, or CFRN
- Active, unrestricted RN license in Washington, DC (no disciplinary actions)
Additional Requirements:
- Completion of a comprehensive critical care transport orientation program
- Mandatory participation in ongoing clinical education and skills training
Specialized Training Includes:
Hands-on simulation and procedural training in:
- Endotracheal intubation
- Chest decompression
- Cricothyrotomy
- Pericardiocentesis
- Central line insertion
- Escarotomy
Training may take place across multiple clinical environments including the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Operating Room (OR).
