ICU Unit Notes (Level II Trauma Center Experience Required)
Unit Overview
- Location: ICU – 2nd Floor (MICU with some SICU)
- Total Beds: 16
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
Required Experience & Skills
- Level I or Level II Trauma Center experience required
- Experience in hospitals with 300+ beds
- Highly Preferred:
- CRRT (Prismaflex)
- Pulling sheaths
- Comfortable with high-acuity ICU patients and procedures
Required Certifications
- ACLS
- BLS
- NIHSS
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- CRRT (Prismaflex)
- Rotaprone therapy
- TTM (Arctic Sun)
- ECMO (occasionally)
- 24-hour EEG monitoring
- EVD & LP drains
- Neurosurgery patients
- Trauma cases:
- Drownings
- Tractor rollovers
- MVAs
- Fractures
- Spinal injuries
- Sepsis
- DKA
- Post-operative recoveries
- COVID patients
- Post heart cath (may pull sheaths)
- SI (suicide intervention patients)
Common Procedures
- Mass transfusion protocol (MTP)
- Frequent paralytics (train-of-four monitoring)
- Bedside procedures:
- Tracheostomy care
- Chest tube (CT) insertion
- Bronchoscopy
- Arterial line insertion
- Organ procurement (no transplants performed)
Drips & Medications
- Titration Required: Yes
- Common drips:
- Precedex
- Vasopressors
- Anti-arrhythmics
- Sedation
- Standard ICU infusions
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse:
- Days: Staff nurse (reduced assignment)
- Nights: May be house supervisor
- Nurse Aides: Yes
- Intensivist/Hospitalist: 24/7 (MD + NP)
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage (assigned to ICU/PCU)
- Equipment: Full respiratory support (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, etc.)
Monitoring
- Tele monitor tech available
- Nurses responsible for rhythm interpretation
- Monitor system: Draeger
Scheduling
- Shifts: 3 × 12-hour shifts (starting at 7:00)
- Scheduling:
- No guaranteed block scheduling
- Schedule released 6 weeks in advance
- Special requests discussed with leadership
Weekend & Holiday Requirements
- Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday)
- Participates in holiday rotation
On-Call / Floating
