Description
Registered Nurse – Ortho (Travel/Contract)
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (typically 3 shifts per week, 18:45–7:15)
Hours per Week: 36 (option for 48 hours available)
Job Overview
- Fast-paced orthopedic and neuro spine unit with med-surg and post-surgical patients
- Average daily census: 37 patients; 39 beds/rooms
- Patient population includes orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, and post-surgical diagnoses
- Covid patients are cared for on all units unless in ICU
- Nurses must manage pain effectively for ortho and spine patients
- Expected nurse-to-patient ratio: 5-6:1, can flex to 7:1 in extreme cases
- Float requirement: Must float to other med-surg units as needed based on census
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; missed weekend shifts must be made up on a weekend
- Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
- No approval for holiday time off (RTO)
- Maximum 7 days of RTO allowed for auto-offer
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of orthopedic nursing experience, with orthopedic experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in charge nurse roles
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLS certification
- Level I trauma experience
Licensing & Certifications
- NIH Stroke certification (annual completion required)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred
- Additional certifications such as Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or others as applicable
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Background check within 6 months required for clinical candidates
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Required health immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or declination if applicable)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Physical exam documentation as per travel agency standards (not required by client for crisis profile)
- Color blindness testing within 1 year
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with minimum passing score of 82% (3 attempts allowed)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required for new contracts
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and education modules, including medication safety and confidentiality agreements
- Photo for badge required prior to start (passport-style, white background, business attire)
- Must complete corporate ID setup and login to required learning platforms within specified timeframes
Work Environment & Additional Notes
- No return-to-office (RTO) after booking allowed onsite; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation
- Must comply with all hospital policies and mandatory annual compliance training
- Must complete bloodborne pathogens training review
- Must adhere to tobacco-free campus policies
- Must complete non-Novant health worker orientation if applicable
- Must sign confidentiality and other facility-specific agreements
- Must be prepared for a fast-paced environment with orthopedic and neuro spine patients requiring attentive care
Prior Travel Experience
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers with EPIC experience are accepted
This position is ideal for experienced orthopedic RNs comfortable with night shifts, fast-paced med-surg environments, and flexible floating assignments.
