RN – Stepdown Unit Position Details

Department Overview

Unit: Stepdown
Number of Beds: 22
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4

Common Diagnoses / Patient Types:

Heart failure
Atrial fibrillation (Afib)
Respiratory distress
Stroke

Clinical Responsibilities
Drip Titration Required: Yes
Common Drips: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin
Charge Nurse:
- Present on each shift
- Carries a full patient assignment
Support Staff:
- Patient Care Techs available (Ratio: 1:10)
  
  Respiratory Equipment:
  - CPAP
  - RNs responsible for troubleshooting
- Telemetry:
  - RNs must read and interpret their own strips
    
    Scheduling Details
  - Shifts:
    - Days: 06:30 – 19:00
    - Nights: 18:30 – 07:00
  - Scheduling Type: Cyclic
  - Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  - Holiday Requirement:
    - 1 major holiday
    - 1 minor holiday
      
      Floating & Orientation
    - May float to ICU if qualified and experienced
    - Orientation: 1 shift (12 hours) on the unit
