Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour day shifts (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM), 36 hours per week
Patient Population: Primarily stroke patients, neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and other neurological diagnoses
Unit Details:

  • 42 daily census, 43 beds/rooms
  • 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with optional specialized training
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:6
  • Floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units
  • Travelers work every other weekend; call-offs require make-up shifts

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • Completion of 2 or more successful travel assignments
  • Proficient in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification or competency

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 36 hours
  • Floating and weekend work training as needed
  • Optional Epic test-out available for experienced Epic users (not guaranteed)
  • Navy scrubs required

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) required within 1 year
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if needed)
    • Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal
    • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physician-signed TB questionnaire required
  • Annual compliance and facility-specific education modules required
  • Confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment required

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Preferred scheduling type
  • Floating to other MedSurg/Telemetry units and COVID care units may be frequent
  • Must work every other weekend; call-offs require make-up shifts within the same week or at contract end
  • Block scheduling not guaranteed
  • No RTO (release time off) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation

Additional Notes

  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel/per diem acute care nurses
  • Employment application must be uploaded prior to start
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Color blindness testing required within 1 year prior to start
  • Radiation badge required only if applicable to specialty (not typical for MedSurg Neuro)

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg Neuro RNs with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable with telemetry, dysrhythmia management, and floating across related units. Compliance with all health, background, and facility-specific requirements is mandatory.
