ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Chesapeake, Virginia
Job Details
- Location: Chesapeake, Virginia (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 4x12 hour shifts (19:00 - 7:30)
- Hours per Week: 48 hours
- Schedule: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts available; includes nights, weekdays, every other weekend (EOW), float, and holidays
- Overtime: Paid after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule; candidates must indicate preference
Patient Population
- Neurosurgical and post-stroke patients
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Post-surgical care
- Trauma
- Sepsis and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS)
- Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum of 3 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with ventilator management
- Experience with conscious sedation
- Experience in dysrhythmia and emergency management
- Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
Additional Requirements
- No license or background hits allowed (zero tolerance policy)
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (local candidates within 50 miles will not be accepted)
- Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license required for address verification prior to offer acceptance
- Proof of 2 professional references required
- Complete application/resume required
- Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually
- Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing required (80% minimum score, one attempt only)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Color blindness test required (100% passing score, retake allowed once)
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
- Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required for ICU and related units
- Primary source verification of state license required
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start; facility does not allow PAPR; must pass fit test to continue contract
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year; annual testing required
- Immunizations or titers required within 10 years for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (or declination)
- Varicella (declination allowed except for Mother Baby or infant/peds care)
- Tdap vaccine required (no exemptions) for certain units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved medical/religious exemption with mask requirement)
- COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available
Background and Compliance
- 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually; must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals/extensions
- Fingerprinting required for all candidates starting 1/1/2026; must be completed promptly to avoid delays
- National Criminal Record Request form must be signed within 72 hours of contract signing if fingerprinting is required
- Photo for badge (passport style, shoulders up, plain background) required before start
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgements required within specified timeframes
Notes
- Candidates must indicate shift preference regarding overtime eligibility
- Floating to other units is mandatory as needed
- Strong neuro experience is critical for consideration
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not explicitly required
