Description

Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
  • Patient diagnoses include AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
  • Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection may be required.
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (may increase with census).
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 to 7:15).
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED.
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Contract staff expected to participate in Storm/Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg nursing experience, with Med/Surg experience within the last year.
  • Experience in an inpatient setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Oncology experience.
  • Skills in colostomy care, central line blood draw, PICC line management, and surgical drain management.

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Must complete facility-specific medication safety training and other required education modules.
  • Required to complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute candidates).
  • Must complete annual compliance and facility-specific mandatory education.

Systems & Documentation

  • Experience with PYXIS medication system, EPIC electronic health records, and SBAR communication method preferred.

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation).
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella. Declinations generally not accepted except for flu vaccine with approved exemption.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Drug screening within 6 months of start.
  • Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
  • Physical exam not required for this crisis profile.

Uniform & Appearance

  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
  • Photo for badge: Passport-style photo on white background required immediately after signing contract.

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation.
  • Shifts called out must be made up with rescheduled shifts.
  • Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed during the contract.
