Unit Overview
Suites / Labs
- 1 IR Room
- Cath Lab (8th floor) used for vascular procedures
- Staff may work in both units within the same day
Staffing
- 7 RNs staffed
Average Cases Per Day
IR
- 5–8 procedures/day
- CT prep & IV starts for approximately 50 patients/day
Common Diagnoses / Procedures
Special Procedures
- Second RN available if sedation needed
- Breast biopsies
- US-guided thyroid needle aspirations
- CT/MRI scan prep
- IV starts for pediatric and adult sedation cases
- Oral preps
- Monitoring pacemaker patients
IR Procedures with CT/US
- Various biopsies (including IR breast biopsies)
Complex Vascular Procedures
- Embolization of bleeds, fibroids, pre-surgical tumors
- Pulmonary embolism thrombectomies
- Deep vein thrombosis treatment utilizing INARI or EKOS systems
Drain Placements
- Abscesses
- Pleural effusions
- Hip/knee collections
- Paracentesis
Pain Management Injections
- Cervical, thoracic, lumbar spine
- Shoulder, hip, and knee injections
Line Placements / Interventions
- Permcaths
- PICCs
- Ports
- Tunneled catheters
- Chemo infusion ports
- Fistula interrogations
Job Duties
- Assessment and charting via Radiology Flowsheet
- Patient management through all procedural phases:
- Pre-procedure
- Intra-procedure
- Post-procedure
- Communicate with physicians and mid-level providers regarding:
- Plan of care
- Changes in patient disposition
- IV insertions
- CT preps for scheduled patients
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year IR experience
- Must be proficient with IV starts
- First-time travelers accepted
- Critical care exposure/experience preferred
EMR / Equipment
- Allscripts
Interventionalist Coverage / Call
- IR Chair and another MD in-house during the day
- After 5 PM: on-call physician coverage
Leadership / Support
- Charge nurse coordinates and manages scheduling/calendar
- Charge nurse assists with patient care as needed
IR Tech Support
- CST paired with physician
- IR techs provided by IR Radiology Department
Scheduling
Shift Times
- 7:00 PM starts
- 12-hour shifts
Breaks
- 1-hour lunch
- Two 15-minute breaks
Additional Scheduling Notes
- Travelers may provide availability/preferences
- Scheduling flexibility required; block scheduling not guaranteed
- Excessive call-ins may result in termination

- No floating outside IR-specific areas
- May go to Cath Lab for IR-specific procedures only
