13-Week Contract | Full-Time | 40 Hours/Wee
Afternoon Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM (Monday–Friday)

Position Overview

Henry Ford Health System is seeking an experienced Histology Technician to join the Pathology Surgical Department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented laboratory professional with strong histology experience to work in a leading healthcare environment supporting surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology services.

The Histology Technician will perform a variety of laboratory procedures including tissue embedding, microtomy, staining, and equipment maintenance while ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine histology techniques on surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue specimens.
  • Cut tissue sections using a rotary microtome with precision and accuracy.
  • Embed, stain, coverslip, and label tissue specimens according to established procedures.
  • Perform special stains under supervision following standardized protocols.
  • Prepare, mix, and maintain stains, reagents, and special fixatives.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain quality control (QC), CAP, QA, and maintenance documentation accurately.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory levels for laboratory reagents and supplies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to laboratory standard work practices.
  • Support onboarding and training activities for new team members when needed.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 4–5 years of Histology or relevant laboratory experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of histology laboratory procedures and tissue preparation techniques

Education

One of the following is required:

  • Associate’s Degree with coursework in Anatomy, Biology, and/or Chemistry
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biology
    OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with 2 years of relevant laboratory experience

Required Skills

  • Tissue embedding and microtomy
  • Histology staining procedures
  • Laboratory equipment maintenance
  • Quality assurance and quality control documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and specimen handling accuracy
  • Ability to distinguish colors and maintain visual acuity for laboratory procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and compliance standards

Certifications

  • HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) Certification
  • BLS Certification

Schedule Details

  • Full-Time | 40 hours/week
  • Afternoon Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Monday through Friday
  • 13-week contract assignment
  • Interview Process: 30-minute MS Teams interview
