IMCU Registered Nurse (RN) – Job Summary
This facility requires a clinical prescreen prior to consideration. If the candidate is recommended, the hiring manager has 24 hours to accept or decline. There will be no second phone interview.
🏥 Unit Overview
- Department: Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)
- Total Beds: 22 private rooms
- Patient Ratio: 1:5 (days and nights)
🧠 Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
This is a high-acuity step-down unit managing a mix of cardiac, neuro, and respiratory patients, including:
- Post–open heart surgery (day 3+)
- Craniotomy patients
- Cardiac catheterization (radial and femoral access)
- Watchman procedures
- Pacemaker placements
- COPD patients with Zephyr valves
- Tracheostomies (no ventilators)
- Patients on CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow nasal cannula
- Chest tubes and continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
💉 Clinical Responsibilities
- RN must be comfortable with titrating IV drips, including:
- Cardizem (diltiazem)
- Amiodarone
- Nitroglycerin (for blood pressure control)
- Insulin infusions
- Heparin
- Dopamine/Dobutamine (renal dosing)
- Telemetry monitoring is performed by RNs, with support from a centralized tele tech system.
👩⚕️ Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse:
- Day shift: does not take patients (acts as team lead)
- Nights/weekends/holidays: takes patient assignment
- CNA ratio: 1:10 (assists with vitals, blood sugars, and ADLs)
- Respiratory Therapy support available (CPAP, BiPAP, HFNC equipment)
Scheduling & Requirements
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (5–5)
- Schedule created by manager with attempts to accommodate block scheduling
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No on-call or standby requirements
- Scrub color: Caribbean blue
