Required Certifications
RN ID/Compact state, ACLS (AHA or ARC), BLS (AHA or ARC), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), PALS, STABLE Certification
Shift Notes
7p-7a, weekends as needed, first to float
Required Experience
- MUST HAVE: Antepartum, Labor & Delivery, and Postpartum experience
- Minimum 3+ years experience required
- No first-time travelers
- Strong communication skills required
- Must understand chain of command and resource utilization
- Preferred:
- OR circulating experience for C-sections
Float Pool Details
RNs float within Women’s Services only:
- Antepartum
- Labor & Delivery
- Postpartum
Possible facilities:
- Boise
- Meridian
- Nampa
Travelers may float:
- Between units
- Between campuses
- Mid-shift if needed
Assignments are visible via app approximately 1 hour before shift start.
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
Antepartum
- 22+ week gestation patients
- High-risk pregnancies
Labor & Delivery
Common patient types include:
- PPROM
- Placenta previa
- Pre-eclampsia
- Diabetes
- Twins/multiples
- High-risk OB patients
Postpartum
- Full couplet care assignments
- Car seat studies
Ratios & Standards
- Follows AWHONN guidelines
- Postpartum ratio:
- 1:6 couplet care
Certifications Required
- BLS
- ACLS
- NRP
- AWHONN fetal monitoring courses
(STABLE preferred; required for permanent staff)
Skills & Responsibilities
Required
- Titrating drips
- Reading fetal strips
- Couplet care
- Antepartum care
Preferred
- Circulating C-sections
Drips Commonly Used
- Pitocin (typically 1–20 units/mL, may go to 40)
- Magnesium
- Insulin
Support Staff & Resources
- Charge nurse on every unit/shift
- Surgical techs available
- NICU attends deliveries
- OB Laborist available 24/7
- Neonatologist available 24/7
- Dedicated CRNA 24/7
Respiratory Support
RNs only responsible for:
- PPV troubleshooting/support
NICU responds to deliveries.
Monitoring
- No tele techs for fetal monitoring
- RNs read fetal strips
- Cardiac strips interpreted by tele techs when applicable
Scheduling
Shift Times
- Days: 06:45–19:30
- Nights: 18:45–07:30
- 4x12 schedule
Scheduling Notes
- No self-scheduling
- Shift trades allowed
- Management may adjust schedule as needed
- RTO should be submitted upfront
Weekend Requirement
- Every other weekend (not more than unit norms)
Holiday Requirement
- Travelers generally not scheduled, but may occasionally be required
Call Requirement
- None
Orientation
Approximately 4–5 shifts total:
- 1 shift at Nampa
- 1 shift at Meridian
- 1 shift at Boise
- 1 partial Antepartum shift at Boise
- Exposure to:
- L&D
- Postpartum
- Antepartum
- OR workflow
